Trump is the anti-Washington
What he has done is abnormal and unprecedented, at least in America
Tom Hoefling
This morning there was some Trump supporter on X saying that what happened at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021 was a "normal riot," and that the pardons of the violent Trump rioters were "normal."
My response:
There's absolutely nothing normal about a U.S. president inciting many thousands of his supporters to go to the Capitol and violently stop the one step - the final step - in our electoral college process that our Constitutional explicitly requires.
Once upon a time George III called George Washington the greatest man in the world because, unlike just about any other great general or political leader in history, he was willing to let loose of power and go home to obscurity. And Washington didn't just do it once. He did it twice.
Donald Trump is the anti-Washington. Trump was willing to tell any lie, to coerce any person, to do any dirty deed necessary, in order to gain and hold power, up to and including sending a violent mob to do his bidding.
And, be warned: He still is.
For Trump to grossly misuse the presidential pardon power on behalf of seditionists who were willing to carry out violent insurrection on his behalf is the ultimate insult to the memory of George Washington. It's a black mark on the honor of America. And it represents - he represents - an unprecedented threat to the safety and security of the American republic.
